MARK BRANNER,25,was born in California and raised in Taiwan. He has been interested in Chinese culture since early childhood.
After graduating from the Drama Department of UCLA,Mark came to Chengdu to work as a teacher in Sichuan Education Institute. He was fascinated by Sichuan Opera performances in Chengdu’s teahouses.Upon first seeing Sichuan Opera,he became interested in its clown roles, which embody both positive and negative characters.Later,he enrolled in the provincial Sichuan Opera School, becoming the first foreign student ever registered there.Xu Mingchi,an instructor in clown roles, took Mark under his wing and taught him how to perform.
One year later,Mark, always an eager student, had mastered the recitation, acting, singing and acrobatics needed for a clown role.He is 1.93 meters tall, which makes it more challenging for him to perform at times. On July 5,1996,Mark held his graduation performance at the Sichuan Opera Theater of Sichuan province.
After applying makeup and putting on his clown costume,Mark takes on the spirit of his character. In the world of theater, there is a saying:From an actor’s performance on stage one can see the efforts behind the curtains.Mark was deeply moved by his Chinese colleagues, including the supporting actors, the wardrobe staff, stage hands and art designers. The musicians in the band, knowing that the Sichuan Opera Troupe has difficulties obtaining funds, accompany the actors free of charge.Their kindheartedness, morale and devotion often inspire Mark.
One minute on stage needs ten years of practice behind the curtains. In the Sichuan Opera Rolling the Lamp,Mark performed splendidly, though he had studied for only one year.In another aria,Writing an Article,Mark successfully portrayed the ‘ugly dandy' of the story Mark,as a young American, uses his wide repertoire of expressions, superb skills and exaggerated movements to depict a clown. Both professionals and amateurs applaud his performances, and he leaves theaters full of laughter.
Mark has succeeded as the first Sichuan Opera clown played by a foreigner. He made headlines in local papers, and has gone back to the States with applause in his wake.He hopes to make his dreams come true, and make Sichuan Opera as famous as Sichuan cuisine
