A crime
In Australia,tax evasion is a crime.It means not paying the amount of tax that is your due.
It is considered a crime because by evading tax,you are escaping your financial responsibilities to the government.Since tax is the money the government use to build infrastructures and provide services to the public; by evading tax,you are indirectly bringing down the general standard of public service and the overall standard of living.Thus by evading tax,you are ripping off the rest of the society.
The Australian Tax Office is the main organisation in charge of auditing the tax forms and tables of the Australian citizens.Every year,it would send out auditors to audit the tax payments of different industries (e.g.the optical industry,the shoe-manufacturing industry etc).They would check the receipts and books the workers in these industries keep and see if the amount of tax they are paying is the correct amount.They may also ask to see proofs of the items the taxpayer has claimed for tax return.
If you have been charged of tax evasion,you would face lawsuit.And if you are found guilty,you may pay a very large fine and face possible jail terms.This is because tax evasion is a serious crime in Australia.Not only this,your entire personal image and reputation would be tainted if you have a criminal record of tax evasion; it would make it difficult to apply for managerial positions or starting your own businesses in the future.
Therefore,do not evade tax!
